Never Say Never (It's A Revival!)
March 30, 2015
The Fashionable Mum recently posted about wearing trends for the second time, foreshadowing a return to the 70s for fashion trends this year, adding to the number of sources I’m hearing this rumour from. Kimba Likes recently posted on the return of flares. iCurvy has heralded the arrival of Marsala.

As fads and fashions come and go, I find myself eating my own words when it comes to declaring what I will and won’t wear, eg:
- Boots over jeans
- Leggings
- Jeggings
- Leggings as pants (under a long or tunic top obvs, I haven’t lost my whole mind)
- Chambray v2.0
- Printed pants
- Cropped tops (as in shorter length tees, not midriff-baring crop tops)
- Maxi dresses
- Maxi skirts
- Midi skirts
- Anything from Millers
- White shoes
- Ankle grazers
- Lightwash jeans
- Oversized sunglasses
The idea of a capsule wardrobe is as foreign to me as a capsule diet would be. I get agitated if I wear the same outfit – or even the same key piece - in the one fortnight, let alone the week.
For reals though, I will never wear the following (again/ever) unless it’s some kind of dress-up joke thing (not bagging it if it's something you wear, it's just not for me/my body type/personal predilictions) and you can quote me on these:
- Jumpsuits
- Playsuits
- Pantsuits
- Flares/excessive bootcuts
- Boob tubes
- Midriff-baring crop tops
- Bum-baring short shorts
- Excessive fringing. Actually, make that any fringing.
- White pants
- Cut-outs
- Big loose armholes
- Batwing sleeves
- Moccasins
- Boat shoes

I remember when we hit peak skinnies some years ago, and suddenly other styles of jean seemed not to exist. I am a skinnies lover and I am now feeling the need to stockpile like a doomsday prepper in case of an extreme flares-takeover !
ReplyDeleteI hear you, Anonymous! Soon the shelves will be cleared out as paranoid preppers stockpile their minimalist underground wardrobe bunkers!
DeleteDare I say, I wore white pants yesterday. Several of your "never" items are worn here in New Zealand, although I bought the white pants in Spain, where everyone was wearing them.
ReplyDeleteOh white pants look great on some people, all crisp and stuff - I would probably look like a small watercraft. All of those things are worn here in AUS too with varying degrees of success . . . just not by me :)
DeleteI am so pleased to see flares are back..until I go to my little collection of flared jeans in my wardrobe and see that they only work with heels and I just can't wear heels often enough now to justify them. I'm at a loss! I might get them shortened, but flares and flats aren't such a good look. They are in wardrobe limbo at the moment waiting on a possible trip to the tailor.
ReplyDeleteI try not to say I'd never wear something, as like you I find I can change my mind! My sister is still upset with me that I decided one day I liked sleeveless tops, even after hating them for years. Every now and then she will hiss 'but you said you hated sleeveless tops' at me when I'm shopping with her and pick up something sleeveless. Never forgets that one!
I think you could pull off flares though Mica, as you have a bit of a boho vibe whereas I'd look more like Eddie from Ab Fab than Patsy! I'm definitely learning to hold my tongue as new/old trends arrive on the scene as I'm sick of eating my words!
DeleteYour never going there again list, looks a lot like mine.
ReplyDeleteHaha, so not rocking the booty shorts next summer then, Raychael??
DeleteOh, memories and giggles on these lists! I found it interesting when some 90's fashion came back recently - Doc Martins with skirts, and sunflower print?? It doesn't seem long enough ago to be making a retro comeback!
ReplyDeleteExactly, Lisa! I'm all "but I was ot wearing that stuff ten minutes ago . . . Oh it's twenty years ago, right"
